Colonet, Mexico was Lighting for Literacy's first deployment location in 2012. Volunteers from Los Gatos Morning Rotary and Los Gatos United Methodist Church come together under the amazing leadership of Pete and Marna Taylor

Middle and high school students built the power boards during three workshops at the LGUMC in 2012, enabling co-founders Jesse Salem and Doug McNeil to refine procedures for the future launch of their middle school STEM curriculum.

The 18 solar panels installed thus far will provide 90,000 lumen hours per home of LED lighting for Colonet youth living off-grid. The cumulative lumen hour youth benefit is 4.2 million hours over 5 years!

Years ago I was at the home of a family we knew in Colonet.  While there I realized their teenage daughters were studying by candlelight.  I said to myself, 'I need to do something about this.'  When I found the LED strips we use, I knew we had the answer.
